Melasma is a common skin condition in which brown patches become visible in sun-exposed areas of the skin. Sunburns or chronic low-level sun exposure can lead to melasma.
Medications such as birth control pills, which make people more sun sensitive, can also aggravate melasma. There is also evidence that blue light from smart phones and computer screens can worsen melasma.
Melasma Treatment and Prevention
The most important part of treating melasma is diligent, daily sun protection. In addition, your dermatologist will prescribe topical creams that will help fade the brown patches. Chemical peels are also useful in treating hyperpigmentation associated with melasma.
